Claude vs GPT for Business Automation: Our Take After 30 Projects
April 3, 20259 min read
We get asked this every week. Here's our honest take after shipping 30+ production AI systems.
TL;DR: We default to Claude for business automation. It's more consistent, better at following complex instructions, and the context window makes document work dramatically easier.
Where Claude wins:
- ▸Instruction following: Claude is reliably better at doing exactly what you specify without creative liberties. Critical when you're parsing orders, generating proposals, or doing data extraction.
- ▸Long documents: 200k context. We've fed entire contracts, 100-page PDFs, full email threads. GPT-4's 128k is often not enough.
- ▸Tone and format consistency: Client-facing outputs like proposals, summaries, and reports are more consistent with Claude.
- ▸Safety: Claude's constitutional AI approach means fewer hallucinated legal claims or fabricated data — important when outputs reach end customers.
Where GPT is competitive:
- ▸Existing integrations: If you're already on Azure or using OpenAI plugins, GPT is less friction.
- ▸Image generation: DALL-E integration is convenient if you need it.
- ▸Fine-tuning: GPT-3.5 fine-tuning is cheap and surprisingly effective for narrow classification tasks.
Our stack: Claude Sonnet for most tasks, Haiku for high-volume classification and routing, GPT-4o when a client requires it for compliance reasons.
The model wars will continue. Build your system so swapping the model is a one-line change.
